Banks have been hiking lending rates in anticipation of tightening liquidity and high commodity prices have fueled expectations that the RBI has to raise key policy rates as early as its April 20 review meeting. This would be negative for Realty & Auto sector in near term.
Banks with a higher proportion of CASA deposits, such as HDFC Bank and Axis Bank are likely to be the most impacted by the new savings rate guidelines, as their interest expenses will be higher from FY11 onwards.
Presently, the savings rate is administered at 3.5% p.a, calculated on the minimum balances held in the accounts during the period from the 10th day to the last day of each calendar month. This system of calculation results in customers receiving an effective interest rate of around 2.5%p.a on their savings deposit and thus, benefiting banks. However with the new guidelines on savings rate coming into effect from FY11, there will be an increase in the interest outgo of SCBs, thus affecting their margins and profitability.
